Cass Elliot was an American singer and actress, best known as a member of the folk rock group The Mamas & The Papas. She was born Ellen Naomi Cohen on September 19, 1941, in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised in Alexandria, Virginia. She began her music career in New York City in the early 1960s, performing in various groups and recording backup vocals for other artists.
In 1965, Elliot joined The Mamas & The Papas, a group that would go on to achieve great success in the 1960s with hits such as “California Dreamin'” and “Monday, Monday.” Elliot’s powerful voice and dynamic stage presence made her an integral part of the group’s sound and image.
